LITERACY begins by immersing children in literacy-rich environments and fostering a love of language and reading. You can support young children's emerging literacy skills by planning activities that involve discriminating sounds, identifying print, recognizing letters, developing a love of books, writing, and appreciating the rhythm of language.

All skill categories and individual skills are listed in developmental appropriate order , where appropriate. Therefore, a 3 year-old would be working on the beginning skills while a 5 year-old would be mastering the most advanced guidelines.
