Emergent Literacy 12 - 18 months
There are numerous skills that an infant develops during the age of birth to 18 months. Many caregivers and parents don’t understand how providing support activities can eventually support the development of reading and other literacy skills. By providing language and book experiences with infants, the caregiver can support this development and help the child begin the path to becoming a literate child.

 
Phonemic Awareness
Attempts to sing a song.
The child attempts to sing repetitive words heard in songs. (ER3)

    Book Knowledge/Print Awareness
    Manipulates books being read.
    The child attempts to turn pages, hold a book for reading and mimics sounds related to familiar pictures. (ER5)

    Looks at books independently. The child begins to pick up books independently and occaionally indicates the desire for someone to read the book. (ER6)

    Early Writing
    Begins to scribble.
    The child begins to scribble and make marks on paper when given writing instruments, such as a large crayon, marker or paintbrush. (ER8)
