An Activity for Preschoolers |
| This activity will familiarize preschoolers with the concepts of personal and general (shared) space – while they pretend to be in outer space! | |
To expand children's knowledge of and respect for bodies and environment.
To promote the development of children's gross motor skills. |
| | |
Instruct the children to hold their hoops up around their waists, imagining they're in "space capsules." The goal is to move through space without touching anyone else's capsule, even when the available space begins to shrink! Designate the area in which the children are allowed to move. Then explain that you're going to occasionally take a step forward, reducing the amount of space they have to explore.
1. Give the children a signal to start, and let them "fly!"
2. Gradually reduce the area in which they have to move, reminding them, if necessary, not to touch anyone else's space capsule.
3. Quit while the children still have a chance to move around the room without bumping into anyone else's space capsule.
| If you don't have hoops available, you can still play this game. Just ask the children to hold their arms out to their sides and pretend to be airplanes or cars! |
