My Own Ending

An Activity for Preschoolers
Not every story has to end the way the author may have intended. Young children can use their imaginations to guess and predict how a story might end. This activity will help children's recall and memory abilities, as well as foster creativity.
Goals
To predict what will happen next in a story.

To foster creativity while exercising recall and memory abilities.

Before You Start
Make sure to chose a story, such as Is Your Mama a Llama? with a well-defined ending that will allow children to make a prediction as to what they think will happen at the end.
Let's Begin
1. Read the story aloud to the children.

2. Stop along the way to ask questions, stressing, "What do you think will happen next?"

3. Before the end of the story, stop and close the book.

4. Ask the children to go back to their seats.

5. Give each child a sheet of construction paper, and ask them to draw what they think will happen next.

6. Discuss the predictions one at a time. Encourage children to share and explain their illustrations with the class.

7. Have children assemble back in the reading area.

8. Finish the story aloud, and check if any predictions were correct.
Furthermore
If the drawing activity is too difficult, follow the same steps, but discuss possible endings aloud rather than having the children draw their own endings. This way the children are still utilizing the same skills, only in a different context.
