Activity: Oral Word Families
Materials Needed:
Word family cards for the teacher’s use (optional)
Let’s Get Started:
1. Choose a word that fits into a word family (word families are rhyming word chunks that can create a group of words, such as "at" or "op"). For example, say "cat."
2. Have the child orally change the beginning sound of the word "cat" to create other words. For example, the child might say, "hat,", "fat," "sat," etc. (Keep in mind, this in an oral activity. Accept any answer that fits into the word family. For example, if the child says, "wat," that is a correct answer although it may not be a common word.)
3. Repeat this activity using a different word family.
