Activity: Does It Rhyme?
Materials Needed:
Word cards (These cards should contain a central word for discussion, several other words that rhyme with the central word and several that do not. For example, if the central word is "block," the card deck could contain: sock, dock, flock, rock, house, blue, tree and bug.)
Let’s Get Started:
1. Place the central word card in front of the child and read the word.
2. Tell the child that she is going to choose which other words rhyme with the central word and which words do not.
3. Go through the cards, reading each card to the child.
4. Have the child choose which words rhyme with the central word and which words do not.
NOTE: Phonemic Awareness is auditory, and this activity can be done orally without cards. This activity suggests cards because kindergarten children are usually ready to also have a visual clue when they work on rhyming.
